Summertime is many people’s favourite time of the year. And what better way to spend it than outside in your beautiful garden soaking up the sun with the birds singing and the bees buzzing.

It’s best to start preparing early. So to make sure your garden is looking lush and beautiful for the next few months, here are a few of our gardening tips for summer.

First things first, if you haven’t already, give the garden a good spring clean and tidy up. Remove dead plants and branches, as well as any debris that may have built up. Look out for diseased trees and plants. If you think they may be diseased, call A1 Sure Services for advice from expert arborists. We can let you know if some trimming or pruning will be enough or if complete removal of the tree is required.

Next, you’ll want to make sure the soil is sufficiently enriched. Naturally enriched soil will be dark brown or black. If yours looks like a lighter brown then get some good quality compost and add around 15cm of it to your current soil. Dig it into the surrounding area, loosening the soil as you go, which will also provide room for roots to breathe and grow.

When deciding which new plants to grow, making a plan is important. Make sure you plan for your location and the expected hot and dry weather. Don’t get too carried away with planting seeds, however. Have a clear vision in your mind of what you want the garden to look like and stick to it.

If you’re not experienced at gardening, buying starter plants is the best thing. These have been grown in ideal conditions and are ready to be put straight into the ground.

Not all plants will be suited to the summers conditions or even the conditions in your garden. Take note of how much sunlight your garden receives throughout the day and plan accordingly.

If your garden is susceptible to drying out, then planting things like cacti, succulents and grasses is ideal.

To protect against weeds, we recommend creating a barrier against them. Note that this must be done before you start putting in your own plants. First, remove all of the weeds and as much of their roots as possible, next lay down some cardboard then pour soil over the cardboard and build your garden bed. The cardboard will block sunlight and nutrients from reaching the buried weeds and prevent them from taking over your garden. Another way to protect against weeds is applying mulch. When spreading the mulch, be sure to leave some space around the base of your trees and plant stems to avoid rot.
